Nursery School

The Bnai Yeshurun Nursery School provides a loving, warm Judaic atmosphere for 3 and 4 year olds. For an appointment or further information, please call Jill at 201-836-6871.

PHILOSOPHY & MISSION
We have been designing a unique curriculum which combines the cutting-edge, child-centered approach to secular early childhood education with Torah. We have received grants to assist us in developing this curriculum from Jewish Educational Services of Bergen County and the Board of Jewish Education of New York.

What is child-centered education?
Child-centered education is currently promoted by the major national organizations that advocate for quality early childhood education, like NAEYC/National Association for the Education of Young Children and Bank Street College of Education. It is a system whereby the children are active partners with the teachers in advancing the curriculum. The program is designed to be sensitive to the individual needs and interests of the children and children make choices and decisions throughout the day. Children can work alone or in small groups, in addition to full group activities that are led by the teacher. Much of the equipment are real everyday objects instead of plastic toys-real silverware and pots and pans fill the play kitchen, cell phones and cameras are in the dramatic play corner, siddurim and talleisim are added to the dress-up carousel. For children at Bnai Yeshurun Nursery School, PLAY IS REAL!

How is it combined with Torah?

In our school, there is no separation between secular and Judaic learning. All learning comes from Torah and Torah is integrated into all learning. When we learn Parshat Breishit (which we do for almost a full month!) we experiment with light/dark, water, plants, animals, the human body, etc. When we learn Parshat Noach we return to water, rain, sinking/floating, etc. We introduce woodworking and wood construction. Finally, with the appearance of the rainbow, we focus on colors and color mixing. In addition, the considerate and polite behavior exhibited by the children and the teachers comes straight from the middot and mitzvot stressed in the Torah. So, we truly have a Torah environment, whereby all learning and behavior is based on Judaism. Our teachers are Jewish role models for the children in addition to being warm, nurturing and supportive members of our nursery school community. Please see just one example of this in action below.

Who are our mentors?
We have a close relationship with Stern College Early Childhood Education Department, and are proud to be one of the few sites for the placement of their student interns. Our formal mentor is the world renowned Orthodox early childhood educator, Mrs. Rivka Behar, founder of the program at Stern College almost thirty years ago. Mrs. Behar visits the school, observes the classes, meets with the teachers, and is in regular contact with the director.

Where do parents fit?
We have a very close relationship with the families of our students. The parents fully understand and support our unique approach to Jewish early childhood education. Family members are encouraged to visit the school frequently. There is no need to come for a special event or program. Parents, siblings, and grandparents can just drop in and play with us. There is always something to do!

CREATIVE JEWISH ART EXPERIENCES

Jewish holidays need NOT be times when large numbers of identical projects are churned out. Below, a three-year-old is painting with a spinning dreidel dipped in diluted tempera paint. As he spins the dreidel, it drags the paint across his paper. This simple, open-ended activity actually combines important developmentally appropriate skills with Torah, like fine motor and eye/hand coordination.
