The Shul Administrator provides administrative support to the Rabbis, Executive Director, Youth Directors, and lay leaders to enable the smooth delivery of the Shul’s activities. The candidate must demonstrate exceptional initiative and efficiency, strong interpersonal and communication skills, and possess the highest level of integrity. The Shul Administrator will be privy to sensitive information about CBY’s business, operations, its employees, and its members and must be able to maintain confidentiality.

Established 65+ years ago, Congregation Bnai Yeshurun (CBY) is a large, thriving modern orthodox synagogue with over 800 member and affiliate families. Located in Teaneck, New Jersey, CBY operates seven days a week, from 5 am until after 11 pm. It is home to over a dozen daily minyanim, six minyanim on Shabbat mornings, diverse Adult Education lectures, and an active Beis Medrash program. CBY has a multi-faceted youth program and is home to a small nursery school, independently operated by Yeshivat Noam. Our social hall is the site of many Bnai Yeshurun functions and is also rented for bar/bat mitzvah celebrations and other smachot.

The shul’s lay leadership consists of officers and a board of directors who are elected for two-year terms. Religious leadership is provided by a team of rabbis including our senior rabbi and associate rabbi. There is a three-person administrative staff (Executive Director, Shul Administrator, Bookkeeper), a Facilities Manager, and contracted custodial staff.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: 

The Shul Administrator will report to the Executive Director.

Responsibilities include:

  • Preparing the weekly Shul bulletin - Maintain schedule of upcoming articles; collect articles and Divrei Torah from Rabbis, Youth Directors, and writers; layout bulletin
  • Preparing and sending shul correspondence – weekly Shabbat bulletin, weekly shiur listings, monthly calendar, monthly yahrzeit reminders, day of learning solicitations, event announcements, shiva announcements
  • First interface with members upon office entry
  • Manage website content
  • Create forms for shul events
  • Create flyers/graphics for events or programs in Canva
  • Provide clerical and other support, as needed, to Rabbis
  • Maintenance of membership records in ShulCloud (synagogue management system)
  • Ordering office supplies and monitoring inventory
  • Manage yahrzeit lists for minyanim
  • Manage day of learning listings on electronic display board, shul website, and printed listings
  • Specialty printing: Bar/Bat mitzvah book labels, donation recognition cards, Siddur/Chumash donation recognition & labels
  • Print and distribute source sheets for shiurim throughout the week
  • Manage the creation of the yearly Yizkor Book – create form for submission, send emails to members, collect and cull submissions, work with designer/printer on layout, and proofread for typos
  • Support shul committees in their events – form creation, email announcements, registration lists, sponsorship lists
  • Support Executive Director on various shul initiatives

Required Skills/Experience

Qualified applicants will have:

  • A strong a sense of responsibility/accountability
  • Ability to effectively work in a small team environment
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills: able to take direction, willingness to receive feedback, constructive criticism, and collaborate with team
  • Strength as a problem-solver, out-of-the-box-thinker
  • Effective communications - both oral and written
  • Thorough understanding of the typical activities of an Orthodox Jewish synagogue
  • Strong skills in MS Office and Google Suite
  • Previous experience with ShulCloud a plus; ability and willingness to learn ShulCloud required
  • Experience with Canva and/or willingness to learn
  • Attention to detail and accuracy; experience with proof-reading
  • Ability to work with sensitive information/situations and maintain strict confidentiality and utilize discretion

SCHEDULE & COMPENSATION

Monday – Thursday: 9:00 am – 5:00 pm; Friday: 9:00 am – 1:00 pm (winter)/3:00 pm (summer)

Salary Range: $45,000 - $50,000; commensurate with experience
